AOK - Answers for Older Kansans

Volunteers in the AOK program help seniors live successfully within communities throughout the 18 counties served by the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging. Volunteers are free to help as much or as little as they wish—and on their own time schedules. The only requirements are to attend learning opportunities and report the time they spend volunteering to the Area Agency on Aging.

The Area Agency offers several informal group learning opportunities each year—all are open to the public. Emphasis is placed on helping seniors continue to live within their own homes. Volunteers become a resource within their communities. They answer questions, help seniors find services and transportation to appointments, help deliver meals, and more.

Silver Haired Legislature

The Silver Haired Legislature functions much like the state government. SHLs are elected for two-year terms in odd numbered years. SHLs are active within the community. Through networking they discover needs and issues of the seniors in their communities.

Silver Haired Legislators meet each spring within the North Central-Flint Hills region to identify legislative priorities within the region, then meet in Topeka in the fall with SHLs from across Kansas to debate issues and set state-wide legislative priorities for seniors throughout the state. SHLs advocate for these issues by talking with state representatives, senators and the governor.
