Senior Kansans Can Enjoy Wholesome Goodness from Farmers’ Markets
Kansas farmers are some of the best in the world, and local farmers’ markets help support those farmers while providing their communities with fresh, local products and a place to catch up with a familiar face. The Kansas Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (KSFMNP) provides money through vouchers to qualified older Kansans.
Those who wish to apply for the $35 vouchers—or to find out if they qualify—should contact the NC-FH AAA at 785-776-9294 or 800-432-2703.
You can also download an application here, and the proxy form here. If you will be using a proxy, you need to fill out two copies of the form and return one to the agency with your application, while the other copy should be kept on hand by your proxy when they are doing the shopping.
This popular program provides $35 in vouchers to Kansans over age 60 who meet income guidelines. Those receiving vouchers can use them to purchase fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally-grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey from participating farmers at local farmers’ markets
To qualify, seniors must be age 60 or older and have an annual gross income at or below $25,142—which is $2,096 per month. Vouchers are distributed on a first come, first served basis and may be used at participating markets from now to November 1, 2022. Eligible Kansans from anywhere in Kansas may shop at participating farmers’ markets with vouchers.
The North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging coordinates with the KSFMNP to provide these vouchers. The NC-FH AAA is delighted to work with the Kansas Department on Health and Environment and other Kansas Area Agencies on Aging on this initiative.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment would like to expand this program to other counties, since it boosts the success of farmers’ markets while improving nutrition of people in the county. Farmers’ markets interested in accepting vouchers should contact the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Nutrition Program at 785-296-8060.
