Agency Concerned about Evergy Rate Hikes

The North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging is deeply concerned about both of Evergy’s rate hike options that are being considered by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC).

The issue: Evergy has proposed two rate increase options to the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC). These options are linked to each other.

  1. Will impose a $35 monthly fixed service charge for every Evergy customer in 2021—the current service charge is $14.50 a month.
    OR

  2. Will increase monthly costs for Kansas households that use solar or wind homemade energy.

Things to know:

  • Evergy contends increased fees are needed to offset energy delivery costs caused by customers using “homemade” energy. A July 2020 study commissioned by the Kansas Legislature concluded that those using homemade energy options actually pay more than their “fair share” of the costs to deliver power.

  • The proposed fixed $35 customer service charge will be imposed regardless of the amount of energy consumed by households. This will adversely affect low income older Kansans and Kansans living with disabilities. According to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, the national average utilities’ monthly customer service fees is between $5 and $10.
