Attention SSI Households - An Important IRS Deadline has been Extended
/The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has begun issuing Economic Impact Payments, commonly referred to as stimulus checks, to help Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic. The IRS wants to help make sure that everyone gets the full amount of their Economic Impact Payments as soon as possible. They have released new information to help Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Recipients who have children get their entire payments in a timely manner.
If you get Supplemental Security Income, you will get your $1,200 economic impact payment from the IRS automatically, and don’t need to do anything new. But if you are an SSI recipient with qualifying dependents, and you did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019, you need to submit additional information about your children to the IRS by Tuesday, May 5th, 2020. This is to make sure that you get the $500 per child payments in addition to your $1,200 payment. You can do this by using the IRS’s Non-Filer tool, located on their website. SSI recipients who send the information by the deadline will start receiving their automatic payments directly from the Treasury Department in early May.
Here is some other information to help you with the process:
Direct Express account holders may use the IRS’s Non-Filer tool, but they cannot receive their and their children’s payment on their Direct Express card. They may only enter non-Direct Express bank account information for direct deposit, or leave bank information empty to receive a paper check by mail.
If you miss the May 5th deadline, please go to IRS.gov for further information.
